Power Without a Price

The first time Ezra finds Milliways he spends most of the experience overwhelmed by psychic sensory overload. Postcognition doesn’t really mix well with inter-dimensional nexus.

However when he walks out and tells about the experience, the true nature of the place is eventually revealed, furthermore he discovers that the Traders are very interested in using the unique location to seed magic to other worlds and they pay very generously for it. So Ezra’s family all hear about the story and stay in the look out for another door, just in case.

Years pass, and Ezra’s family gets a little smaller, and starting wishing for a door to show up.

Because resurrection is possible, but expensive and bringing three people back is impossibly costly without extreme circumstances.

So Ezra feels extremely lucky the day he finally finds a door again, with family in his apartment where they wait behind after Ezra grabs a few things while Temps holds the door.

He is now in better control of his powers and Milliways massive history doesn’t overload him anymore.

Ezra looks around the bar, sits on a table with a nice view and observes.

Is anyone here that could want and deserve magic?

"That... What? Another Lucy? How?"

Sabrina takes a few moments to process this.

"It's her magic. It's her goddamn magic, isn't it? There's no other option."

Lucy picks up the fluffy blanket thing and puts it back on her shoulders.

"See, it's fine. No need to worry."

[mage_see_mage_do]

The fluffy blanket wraps itself around Lucy in a very cape-like manner it vibrates a little after selling in, changing color rapidly before returning to bright red.

Temperance pokes Lucy gently and frowns.

"Okay," Temperance says "her power is the same, so I don't know how she attracted the thing, or even if it is possible... I do think the thing is safe or it would've stayed around after it got in range of her luck. I am certain of the loyalty thing."

Temperance holds the cape-blanket thing some more and focused.

"No idea how is moving and changing color," Temperance says "I think it can respond to a name, but I am not sure if you can command it or something..."

"Oh, a name! Its name is Binky."

Temperance can see how just now its name has always been Binky.

"That's a stupid name. This whole situation is absurd. I can't take it anymore."

She leaves Lucy and Temps and goes to violently shake Ann awake.

Temperance quietly raises an eyebrow at the person who has found a interdimensional bar in her home.

"The name didn't change," Temps says "Pretty sure your alt named it that too."

Binky reacts to the name with more fluffy full-body rubs.

"I am going to wake up Franklyn too," Temps says.

Fortunately for Sabrina's temper once even though Ann sleeps like the dead she's fully alert five seconds after waking up.

"So, what do we have on agenda today? I think food is the most limiting factor."

Lucy, who has been fully absorbed in her new shiny toy, looks up.

"Breakfast?"

Franklyn yawns softly like a bear waking up after the winter.

"Anyone said Breakfast?"

"Lucy did," Temps says sarcastically "she also was found by an magic cape thing that belonged to her alt."

"Ooh, let me see! What can it do?"

[can_i_go]

"Well, it likes me, and it changes color. Also it's super fluffy and warm. I love it already."

[can_i_stay]

"That's so cute."

[mage_see_mage_do]

"I have no idea how it is doing what it does," Temperance says "except that is some kind of magic."

Franklyn looks at Lucy.

Franklyn looks at Binky.

Franklyn smiles and says "That is adorable! Where I can get one?"

"You need another of me. One who can make magic items."

She looks at Binky for a moment.

"I wonder how it got here. Doesn't she miss it? I'd miss it if I lost it."

"Ooh, can I pet it?" Franklyn asks?

[mage_see_mage_do]

"I am now wondering the saddest story," Temperance muses "where she had to abandon it here like a pet or something... I don't think it was that, maybe she went swim in the lake and a gust of wind carried it here? Or maybe someone stole it from her? I am not sure how strong it is or if it needs rest."

[can_i_go]

"I wonder if I should return it, maybe the Bar lady runs a lost and found? Do you want to be returned, Binky?"

She definitely does not want to return it, but she doesn't want to make Binky sad either.

If Binky's full-body snuggles means anything, it is that it does not want to be returned.

"We'll cross that bridge when we get to it. Now, food, please?"

Fortunately Sabrina has managed to get the last things done and a fulfilling but quick breakfast is served. Everyone eats, the food is cleaned and sleeping bags and everything else is stuffed back into backpacks that feel much lighter after all the food that's been eaten.

"So, as Ann was asking before we were all distracted by breakfast and Lucy's new fluffy friend, how are we going to do this?" Sabrina asks after she's made sure Lucy hasn't forgotten anything important. (Or not so important things that she would miss like the jewelry she found.)

"I think we can hike a little more before returning to Milliways proper," Temperance eyes the mountains "I probably shouldn't... but I am sooo tempted to take Lucy to a cavern, but I get the vague feeling we might end up returning with a diamond the size of a baby or bigger, and that sounds like a pain to carry around."

[can_i_stay]

"Well, you just broke the rule number one of dealing with Lucy, didn't you?" Ann asks, laughing.

The biggest smile spreads on Lucy's face.

"Let's do it. Come on, let's go, let's go, let's go."

She jumps up and down a few times and starts marching towards where she thinks the caverns are. It's about ninety degrees from their actual location.
